Advent, Day 4: Restoration

Today's reading: Psalm 80:1-7, 17-19

Give us life, and we will call on your name. Restore us, O Lord God of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved. (v.18b-19)

save us,
O Lord God of hosts,
from ourselves

when we become consumed by the
laughter of our enemies
when we obsess about our remembered
glory days
(whether they were real
or imagined)
when we've used your Name
so frequently and so carelessly
that it no longer brings us to awe

save us,
O Lord God of hosts,
from ourselves

when our diet of tears starts to taste
like a feast
when we swell with pride
in our so-called sacrifices
when we invite the derision of the nations
because we then feel justified
in returning scorn for scorn

save us,
O Lord God of hosts,
from ourselves

restore us

not to what we once were
(our chips and cracks may not be un-broken)
not to what we once thought ourselves to be
     (a faulty memory, at best)
not to what we imagine we might someday become
     (a rose-colored vision, a dream)
but
restore us
     bring us back
to your side
to your arms
to your heart

shine upon us,
save us,
O Lord God of hosts,
to your Self
