Advent, Day 16: How joy grows

Today's reading: Isaiah 61:8-11

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my whole being shall exult in my God...  For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations. (v. 10a and 11)

below winter's frozen ground
the seed waits,
storing up energy,
biding its time
until the spring

there is no surprise here:
that where a kernel of joy is planted,
joy will sprout up,
will stretch sky-ward,
will reach its leaves high
and sink its roots deep

in the light
of salvation
nourished by baptisms
of rain
the newborn vine emerges
bursting with
abundant life

in the light
of salvation
nourished by our
baptisms
we emerge to
life's newness
again and again,

again and again, we
wake from
wintertime's sleep
and before the nations
we spring up
with praise

just as we were planted
