Advent, Day 6: How can this be?

Today's reading: Luke 1: 26-35

how can it be
that all creation came to life
at the poetry of his voice
(skies and seas his similes
metaphors of mice, and men)

how can it be
that rainbow promise
that matriarch's laugh
that burning thicket
that passing over

how can it be
that a people in chains
followed the blaze and the cloud
and found a
Promised home

how can it be
that those countless generations--
the innumerable stars,
the grains of sand--
so readily failed, faltered, turned,
forgot, ignored, complained, denied

(and how can it be
how can it ever be
that we still do the same?)

how can it be
that once again
he who has done great things for us
has settled our fears
has forgiven our failures
has made the way to meet us

how can it be
that once again
we are redeemed
